The earliest airplane wings were make of linen stretched over a wooden frame. Most airplanes then had two wings on each side. Why do most planes today have only one wing on each side?

They found that the second wing (bi-wing planes) was not helping the planes lift, but rather was just adding unnecessary weight to the plane. Therefore it was inefficient.

Some planes today actually have a smaller wing in the front and a larger wings in the back. Also, some one plane known as the flying wing did not have a wing in the back. In fact this is basically the design of our new stealth fighters and bombers.

So new designs are coming forward all the time that find new design concepts in flying.

It's much more aerodynamic than multiple wings. Early planes were made from light weight wood and fabric so their was an inherent limit to the length of any one wing due to strength. They compensated with multiple wings stacked ontop of eachother. When they figured out how to make them larger and stronger they decreased in number to two (or one for the B-2 bomber).

Becasue they wouldn't produce double lift. IT would be pretty much the same as a thik wing.... so the gain in lift would not be justified by gain of the weight/cost.
Its more economical with what we have nowdays.

Improved technology. Aircraft aluminum is much lighter and tons stronger than wood, so the Bi-plane design is no longer needed.

Better design provides more lift. Also, more powerful engines allow smaller wings.

Also wind friction is reduced.
