Dr. Samuel Prescott had told him to do zero noise during his trip to Lexington and Concord. This dude decided that the best was shouting his lung out crying "The regulars are out"...Perhaps it created a little of distraction for Samuel Adams and John Hancock to wake up from their sleep and get ready for their nocturnal escape...Then he went to Concord, Massachusetts while William Dawes went in a different direction...

Well I saw the map and here is his journey

10 pm --> leaves Boston
11 pm --> leaves Charlestown
11:30 pm --> reaches Medford
12:05 am --> here is at Samuel Adams and John Hancock and waits for Dawes
12:45 am --> He and Dawes met Dr Prescott in his way to Concord

He screamed that because he heard that the British were coming to fight the Americans. He ran on horse back to alert the colonists and they were able to prepare. This was what helped them win one of the battles. He told the colonists how the british were going to get them. Visit http://poetry.eserver.org/paul-revere.html

If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm

Because the British were coming?

He screamed it to warn the colonists that they need to get ready. Many of them were already ready, and simply waiting for the alarm (Paul Revere).

he actually said "the redcoats are coming"
he was British himself (as were the colonists)

therefore, that phrase is a myth
