I agree with macarthur1977's first paragraph-thanks to the
invasion, the U.S. is committed to cleaning up the mess made
in Iraq. However,American troops should leave as soon as possible after establishing-or trying to establish-a stable government. To pull all the troops out within my first term in
office would be my goal.
That being said, extricating America from the trap that Bush
has sprung might be a lot easier said than done. It could take
much longer. My hope is that future Presidents don't forget
how bloody, draining and de-moralizing for the country a
questionable foreign war can be. Bush obviously forgot that
lesson, which had previously been learned in Vietnam.

First off, we should never have invaded that country. That said is like closing the barn door after the horse escapes. Now we are there, we have to deal with the situation. To leave Iraq right now in a state of shaky government and civil war between the sunnis and shias is a crime. Also if we bail out, we must consider the economic damage to our country, and our status in the world. It's complex to say the least. The USA image as a world super power could be marred by this mess. Around the world, the USA could be seen as a super power in nuclear weapons alone. No longer a military might.

In Europe, especially France, they are building modern nuclear weapons and could be deemed in the future as a super power simply for their nuclear capability. Not as a fighting force, but as a nuclear force. Heaven help us. For the USA to maintain its world status, it must successfully resolve the problem it has created.

The USA main point of contention right now is to put a reliable and trustworthy leader in Iraq. Is there one? There might be, yet that person would become a target for any insurgent organization. If I were the US President, I would put together a 20 year plan. A plan to slowly put a trustworthy government in Iraq that is stable. Iraq needs a leader to bind the country. Yet they will not support a leader with close ties to the USA. The leader would have to be autonomous without any USA influence. One solution could be work with Saddam Hussein. Put him back on the right track. Make him stop his dictatorship ways and to govern his countrymen and countrywomen fairly without torture, but through an honest court system. Yet to get Hussein to agree to cooperate with the USA seems unlikely. He's bitter and mean as heck.

Possibly put one of his off-springs in charge. An off-spring who has the respect and the trust of the Iraqis and is willing to cooperate with the USA and other nations in a rational and sensible manner.

I back Bush every step, and feel sorry for the poor guy. Really, he's doing his best, and if i was president, I'd probably delegate the Iraq file to Mr. George Bush.

Well, first, I'd have in my mind that we've really created a lot of problems over there - starting with selling Saddam Hussein weapons to fight Iran in the 80's. When he invaded Kuwait, and we came to their rescue in the 90's, the U.S. dropped leaflets encouraging Iraqis to rebel against Saddam Hussein; we promised the Iraqis that we'd help them. Then we left, and Iraqis that followed our advice were massacred. Despite all of this, there were plenty of Iraqis who were encouraged by the removal of Saddam Hussein and were willing to give us a chance, until we sent over a bunch of ignorant rascists, and put them in charge of prisoners, and gave them the power to send Iraqis to prisons.

So. . .to start with, the whole thing was a joke. First and foremost, I'd eliminate the mindset in my hand that I was dealing with a bunch of 3rd world idiots, and that I knew better than them. I'd respect their culture, keep a firm grip on the chain of command, and pass the word down from the top that we're not there to wipe Iraq off the map. I'd make it clear that mistreatment of Iraqis would be severely punished.

Now, at the same time we were squashing the rebellion, we should have been getting Iraqi's on our side. First - food, water and electricity. Then security; there was already a police force in existance, and they were literally begging to be allowed to police their own streets. I would have set up cultural liasons with Iraqi people, and actually encouraged the military to learn about them, and do their job with firmness and compassion.

The aspect of religion has really made it worse. Bush has taken a bad situation, and turned it into a religious war. People will fight for many things, but it winds down fairly quickly when you're hearts not into it. By turning it into a religious war, he's sparked a wildfire. The man has very little understanding of anyone else's culture. Most Americans are fair-weather Christians at best. The religious Muslims are willing to die for their beliefs, even those who are fundementalist will take up arms if you make it into a fight of Christians against Muslims, which is exactly what it's turned into. Terrorist organizations all over the world are experiencing a surge in recruiting, thanks to all of the terror we've created for them in their worlds.

Think about it - if another nation invaded us, to free us of Bush's policies, even if you disagree with Bush's policies, wouldn't you fight back? Now, imagine you'd decided not to fight this invading force. What would happen once this was brought into your own backyard? Your sisters and brothers were killed by bombs? Your parents, husband, wife was carted away by this invading force for suspicion of being a 'terrorist', and you haven't been allowed to see them or even receive letters from them. They've been held without chance of a trial for four years. Then, the icing on the cake, you find out that your parents had been stripped naked, and forced to 'act out' sodomizing each other. This enemy took away your dad's bible and flushed it down the toilet.

What would you do?

I can't blame Iraqis for resenting American occupation.

I wouldn't listen to anyone who believes everything they hear in the main-stream press, that's for sure. And, thank heaven, our current President doesn't, either.
