I am in the law enforcement field and we are taught that everyu suicide threat is taken seriously! Yes, there is something you can do! If a person ever tells you that he/she wants to commit suicide they have already at some point thought about it. They may have not figured out how or when they will do it, but they have thought about the physical act.
The first thing to do is tell someone...seek to get this person immediate psychaitric treatment..this not saying that the person is crazy...but there is some mental problems that the person is having that he/she is not coping well with...

48% of American people suffer from some type of mental illness during there lifetime... the person you are speaking about is among this 48%....maybe the person is suffering from depression which is a treatable mental illness as the majority of mental illnesses are.....

The main thing is to get the person some help...

Well more than likely if a person is really committed to committing suicide they won't tell you they'll just do it. If they are telling you or other people they are trying to get attention and if they don't get the attention they need then the situation can be more serious.

It's been my personal experience that it is very difficult to change the mind of a person determined to commit suicide. My friend lost both of his legs in a car accident. He was busted for drugs and was looking at several years in prison. So he decided to commit suicide. He left all of his belongings to my husband and me in a verbal agreement, but we were in denial at the time. A couple days later, he overdosed on his medication, that he saved up until he got a fatal dose. I was shocked, but there was nothing I could do or say to make him change his mind......)(

First, listen and understand what the person is going through. It could be a deep problem. Then I suggest asking them if they want help. If they refuse, then get immediate help and explain to them why they need it. Tell them that they deserve to live in this world just like the rest of use and should keep living, not just for you, but for everyone who loves him/her. If that person is really commited to it like you say, the best thing to do is just get help, because obviously talking really won't be the solution.

There seem to be a lot of people who attempt and fail many times. If they really wanted to, all you have to do is put a gun to your head and shoot. I think people don't want to committ suicide at all and you can quite easily persuade them to not do it. Suicide is the most selfish thing a person can do, leaving so many to grieve over them and knowing they will go to hell for it (if the grieving people are religious).
Anyway, no one wants to leave this place of beauty but when there are really mean people in the world, they feel they are left with no choice. By being a good example of a good, kind, nice person, I think you could convince them.

All major cities have crisis hotlines or you can go
to any hospital and ask to see a crisis counselor. Call any hospital and they will give you a phone number where there are people who are trained to deal with this situation. If it is you- don't commit the act. If it's a friend, offer
your support and volunteer to accompany them
to the crisis center!

If someone is in imminent danger of hurting themselves or others, you can have them committed someplace where someone can help them. Yes, there are some people that are so determined to kill themselves that nothing can stop them, but you can't really know that this particular person can't be helped. You have to do everything you can possibly do to get them the help they need.

Yes, it is possible to undo the damage. I have been there and came back through it. It takes a lot of counseling and commitment. In the end you don't realize why you were the way you were.
