TV shows make money for their networks and station affiliates with the cost of the time sold to advertisers. The more viewers of a certain type (for example teens) the more they can charge advertisers of a product that would appeal to that type (example soda or snack foods)

TV shows make money for their creators and cast through selling off or leasing the syndication rights (and residuals,) licensing of products based on the show or characters (like soundtrack albums, t-shirts--even Lost is about to come out with action figures!) and then sales of DVDs.

Commercial television contains more advertisement time than most viewers realize. When stars get those million dollar per episode deals it's because the companies that own the show expect to make up any shortfall from commercials during the airings in syndication and on future sales of DVDs. The ads for those top rated shows are more expensive. Since most sitcoms run 22 minutes that leaves 8 solid minutes of advertisement for each episode. .

YOU PAY !!!

Everybody has answered correctly that the shows sell time slots (periods of time) for advertising. The purchasers of the time slots, mostly corporations, use the time to promote a product or service.

What you should realize is that when you, as the consumer, purchase a product, you are not just paying for the materials that were used to make the product. You also pay the labor to make the product... the storage fees to store it... the transportation fees to move it from manufacturer to storage to store... the salaries of management... the corporation's rent... the corporation's utility bills...etc., etc.

ALSO included in the purchase price is the cost of advertising. So, yes, the shows make money by selling advertising. But it is we, the consumers, who ultimately pay for the advertising (when we buy the product or service)...it is because of us that the shows make money.

Sometimes consumer groups (and other groups) do not like the fact that a particular show is on the air. Sometimes these groups put pressure on the corporation (by threatening not to buy their product) to stop purchasing advertising time on a particular show.

Have you ever wondered why there are advertisements in the middle of TV shows? That's your answer.

Companies sponser television programs in order to get their products on TV while people are watching. Then people go and buy those products. The companies then pay the TV programs more money to get their product on TV some more and thus the cycle continues.

Businesses want to advertise their product during commercials of television shows. They pay the network and the network pays the television show. The more popular the show, usually the higher the cost to advertise a commercial on the show.

Somtimes they advertise their product during the show.. ie Ford on American Idol.

ads.
but also syndication
syndication:
In the television industry (as in radio), syndication is the sale of the right to broadcast programs to multiple stations, without going through a broadcast network. It is common in countries where television is organised around networks with local affiliates, notably the United States. In Europe however, countries have mainly centralised networks without local affiliates and syndication is less common. Shows can also be syndicated internationally.

through the advertisers. that's why shows that have plots about abortion and certain other topics get blocked from going on air - the advertisers get upset.

witness recently Oprah's show about her visit to Auschwitz - presented "with less commercial interruption" !!! they say it like its a special presentation but actually no advertisers were really happy with the subject.

THE BETTER THE SHOW THE BETTER THE COMMERCIALS CAUSE THE BIGGER BUCK COMMERICIALS HAVE TO BE CONVIENCED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO WATCH THAT SHOW TO BE WORTH WHAT THEY PAY. HOPES THIS HELPS.
