Am I the only person that finds it annoying that everyone is making an effort to be understood by the English speaking world yet in countries where English is the first language people do not seem to make the same effort to learn other languages. The Eurovision was just another example of this to me. Surely the Eurovision should be used as a chance to demonstrate the beauty of one's own language and culture to other countries. Also we didn't even really need Terry Wogan to commentate because all the scores were given in... wait for it... English!!

We have become a lazy country - now expecting everyone around the world to understand our language. We used to study foreign languages in high school. Does anyone care any more?
30 years ago I lived in Japan for awhile. Speaking English was a ticket to a promotion for most people in business. To graduate high school a student had to study English for 6 years. Classes in English were available to adults who would stand in lines to sign up.
I get angry when people emigrate here and don't want to learn our language but I also feel that we should be studying other languages to communicate better when we travel or do business abroad.
We need to

Your question deserves an answer.

I think it is a matter of economics. Singing in a language that is understood in a country that can't buy your music as readily as English-speaking or English-understanding countries may limit your income potential.

I think there's a way to do both, I hear songs sung in dual languages, i.e. some verses in Spanish, some in English.

Why don't they mix it up and cover all the bases?

Sorry, I'm just a dumb American. (lol) Euro-vision Song contest????

I was just intrigued by your name, "Fidget".

Wasn't that a character in the movie "Time Bandit's"??? That was a "classic" film. Truly excellent.
