It was actually rags. They placed them down there. Thats where we get the saying being on the rag. :o)

The same thing that many women use today...

below. ALSO...waaaay before that, many
cultures (and some still do) sent women to be
alone and sit on a stool for the whole time.
Smelly room(!), smelly room(!), but good conversations,

Women often used (and reused) sponge "tampons" shoved in by a special device. Not pleasant

Same thing they still use in many countries: soft cloths, which are washed out after each use.
