You can only take 40 so far, and then you will have to take a highway south. 40 ends in Wilmington, NC. Where exactly in SC did you want to go? That will dictate what route you take going south from 40.

The fastest without a doubt:

From almost anywhere in WA state, go to Interstate 90.
Take it all the way to Chicago.
Just outside Chicago, at Gary, get on I-65 south.
I-65 to Indianapolis. Take the I-70 bypass
I-74 to Cincinatti
I-75 to Konxville TN
I-40 to Asheville NC
Then I-26 right into Columbia.

Total mileage: 2877.
At least four, maybe five days, driving. Taking I-40 would add at least 500 miles driving, no matter how you got to it.

I don't want to drive with you to South Carolina from Washington. Too bad for you.
