In calculus, it was a dispute between Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz over who had discovered calculus. They both discovered it independently, Newton eight years before Leibniz, but was 22 and preferred not to publish his finding. Although Leibniz discovered calculus after Newton, he is still thought of as the true founder of modern European mathematics, and many of his notations are still used today.

Never the less, in its time, the dispute caused a bitter argument between the two.
