It can mean diffrent things, usually its the start of a phone # for people on TV. also I use to work as an at&t operator and its also directory assistance for example I live in brevard county FL. If I needed directory assistance for my area id dial 1 the area code (mine is 321)then 555-1212,

Nothing. You hear it on television shows where they use it as the character's first three numbers of their telephone number because it is not a real telephone number. If you notice, in movies and on tv they always say their number is 555-whatever.
