I think the avatars can be interesting and represent a basic image of yourself as you are, or as you want to be, or maybe be totally different from what you are.
However, you should keep in mind that the Answers team has determined that some basic kinds of questions can be considered in violation of the community guidelines found here, http://answers.yahoo.com/info/community_guidelines.php

It's a common mistake, but I would really hate for anyone who is new to get a violation notice for something like asking about their avatar.
