For a new laptop, $1200 isn't gonna cover much unless you go Dell or Gateway. Problem with those guys, their stuff last as long as their warrantys.

First of all, if you're gonna do a lot of travelling, then getting a laptop is the way to go. If not, don't bother dropping $1200 into it. If you're dead set on getting one, you have to know what you'll be doing on it. If it's stuff from your job, you can stick with basic stuff. If it's gaming, $1200 won't be enough. Just look for a good memory size (at least 1.0 gigs), hard drive space (over 80 is good), and whatever extras you can get (dvd-rw drive, etc.)

Brands don't really matter as long as you get what you want. I personally look at the processor and the system memory because I need my computers to do many things. I don't know it in detail but I recommend a computer with a Gforce or Radeon graphic card. If you want a good computer at a good price look at the dell and compaq onces. I don't like apples because not everything is made to work on that.
