Must turn car off to put in gear and pray no traffic is in the way.

if you have this problem in all gears it is transmission clutch, if it only happens in first gear then the synchronizer is bad on first gear .

Only in first gear? Is it hard to shift into higher gears? Grind? Could be the clutch. Checked fluid?

Sounds like Clutch and or transmission fluid levels....

sounds like your clutch isn't engaging properly. when you turn your car off, everything stops, therefore you can put it into gear. time for a new clutch.

Check the little reservoir near the firewall. See if it is full of fluid.
