Dan the brit seems to have this covered I'm pretty sure a big hit in 1946 was Dorothy Squires.. Lovers' Lane it went like this
Come to the station,Jump from the train,
March at the double, down lovers lane
Then in the glen where the roses entwine
Lay down your arms and surrender to mine

A soldier is a soldier and when he's on parade
an order is an order and has to be obeyed
But now you've done your duty
And answered to the call
So now your under orders to hurry home to me
The war had just ended and a lot of servicemen were being demobbed

Can't help you with the number 1 of 1946, charts only started in November 1952.
1962 : I can't stop loving you by Ray Charles.
1964 : The house of the rising sun by The Animals.
1967 : A whiter shade of pale by Procol Harum.

Hope your mum has a great 60th birthday!

There are a number of "Bettles" hits from this era:
Yesterday - Penny Lane - All You Need is Love or
Down Town, but i think these would be a little too early for her.
Why not look into The early 1980's hits!!!
Good Luck and a happy Birthday to your mum...
