Do you mean that the criminal will stand by while you look this up? If you turn too quickly to tell them that it is stolen, they might SHOOT first.
Instead, take the name, address and phone number of anyone that you buy from. Then go to the Police Department to verify each sale. Many communities have a REWARD program, so just maybe you will get a $50 reward for your trouble.

Yes, you will be able to look up a particular product by the serial number and possibly see if any stolen reports have been filed.

Depends on what it is. Books, government items, cds and things of that nature are usually verifiable. Other items are not. If you could give more info on the item in question, I could give a more precise answer. Hope I helped anyways.
