The Mayans also mentioned that just prior to 2012, the animals would rebel ... They are, if you haven't noticed the stories in the news that are becomming more frequent. Elephant attacks in India and in the circus. Bears comming into towns, coyotes and allegator attacks.
The Bible Code imparts an asteroid hitting the earth near 2012 and other prophecies are in line as well. (Look up the Prophecies of The Last Pope on your search engine.) Even Revelations in the Bible speaks of times such as we live in today. Nastrodamous, is another source that implies the time is near.

There's nothing that says the world will 'end', per se. Just that a new cycle will begin. Nobody knows what that will be. That date also signals the end of the 26,000 year cycle of precession (the axis of the Earth traces a circular path in space that takes this long). Could be anything...

There have been numerous predictions about when the world is going to end. Those predictions, based on a variety of scenarios, have all proved to be incorrect. And, if the (presumably ancient) Mayans made such a prediction, I will assume that they were also incorrect.

I think that there's a possibility that something big might happen then. The Maya were an incredibly smart people, and a lot of what they had predicted actually happened around the dates that they specified.
