A friend asked me to the movies today and since I'm hearing impaired he said they have captioning. And I never heard of that before.

If you are hearing impaired, you can ask for assistance from an usher. They can usually supply you with a device to help you.

look for the CC in the listing for the movie

Closed captioning (CC) allows deaf and hard of hearing / hearing-impaired people, people learning English as an additional language, people first learning how to read, people in a noisy environment, and others to read a transcript or dialogue of the audio portion of a video, film, or other presentation. As the video plays, text captions are displayed that transcribe, although not always verbatim, what is said and by whom and indicate other relevant sounds.

I've seen some movies like Passion of the Christ that had captioning in them, but i've never been to a theater that had all captioning.

I've heard of it. I've also heard that movie theaters will provide special headphones for hearing impaired viewers to be able to listen to the movie better. Depending on what theatre you're going to, have your friend ask about hearing impaired availabilities.
