I'm 12 inches taller than my girlfriend and because of that she's embarrased to dance with me. So, on every party we go to, I end up sitting alone and watching her change her dancing partners all night long. What can I do? Do dance lessons help? Can two people with significant difference in height successfully dance together or is our dancing doomed from the start? Are there any dances where height is not so important?

Yes, you can dance successfully together. It may pay you to get dancing lessons together. Find a good dance school and explain the problem. A good teacher will teach you how to compensate for the height difference as you dance together. Maybe you will have to take slightly smaller steps and she will need to take slightly longer steps. That probably sounds silly, I know, but I dance with my boyfriend who is a lot taller, and with the help of a few lessons, we now dance so nicely together that people are always complimenting us.

Try going to a ballroom lesson together so you can learn how to balance your height difference. My current dance partner is 6" taller than me, but I have successfully and beautifully danced with partners well over 14" taller than me. She needs to be comfortable with her height and you need to be able to make adjustments to accomodate her small height (in ballroom, the guy's steps determine how far back the girl moves - it is difficult if the guy doesn't adjust to smaller steps if the girl has short legs). Most Latin dances (salsa, merengue, swing, rhumba, hustle) are not so height-conscious/step-size conscious, so you two may be more comfortable with those rather than the smooth ones (waltz, foxtrot, tango, Viennesse waltz) where step size matters greatly. Once you two can ballroom dance together, you'll be able to do "party dancing" without a problem! My ballroom partner and I have danced in the halls of his frat house with ballroom-inspiried moves and it is a lot of fun, looks great, and he can make me spin/turn which is so exciting because the height difference comes into play some more. If your girlfriend is also light-weight and you are strong, you may be able to pursue swing dancing - with aerial lifts! In that, the height difference/size difference is glorified!

It is sad that your girlfriend doesn't dance with you. I take dance lessons and I sometimes end up dancing with men much taller than me. Yes, it is a bit awkward at first, but once we start dancing, the height doesn't matter.

Taking classes will help you both coordinate and become more graceful.

Your height is ideal for males. I don't think there is a problem. You can have dance lessons to be irresistible for your girl (maybe your not good for her-as a dance partner). You can try ballroom, it requires that the males are more taller.
