Well, tanning between 10am-2pm offers the most exposure to the sun. However, please be smart and use sunscreen. You may be thinking that it will negate the tan, but it won't. I was a swim instructor for three years and wore spf 50 every day and re=applied hourly and I got a great tan-- but not a burn. Without sunscreen you will burn without a doubt. Tanning should not be more than one hour. Oils may help, but only in conjuction with sunscreen.
If you prefer tanning beds, start by going for about 6 minutes. Gradually increase in two minute increments every other day until you have developed a tan. Then you can go back weekly for 20 minutes sessions.
All of this is very unhealthy, makes you wrinkle early, and could be totally avoided and replaced by a decent tanning lotion. Tanning really does age you and has serious risks, and if you don't believe me, watch There's Something About Mary and take notes on the old leathery grandma.

I don't suggest going out for more then 45 mins. I'm sure you have heard all this before, but later on you will be covered with wrinkles and dark age spots all over.
What I suggest is trying out Jergens Natural glow, or one of those products out like it. It's pretty new to the market. It brings out beautiful color. Kinda like a self tanner, but it looks totally natural and gets darker everyday you use it. Plus since it's a moisturizer, it makes your skin so soft and look great!
My all time favorite way to tan is Mystic Tan. Most tanning salons have the booth and you'll be super tan in 30 seconds! It is a little pricey, but totally healthy and makes you dark as if you had been out in the sun everyday for a month. It's amazing. Lasts about 4-5 days, longer as long as you keep moisturized.
Sorry if this didn't exactly answer your question, but just wanted to let you know the other options I have tried that I loved.
Happy tanning :)

You shouldn't. Unless you want skin cancer and to look like your 90 years old when your 30.
I suggest L'Oreal instant bronze, medium/dark. Tanning cream. It DOSN'T turn you orange. (The bronzer in it will, but I'll explain how to get around that)
Take it and slather it on, let it dry once and then put it on again. The bronzer lets you know where it is so you don't miss a spot. Wash your hands after each time or else your fingers will look dirty. Do this right before you go to bed (be sure to let it dry before you get in bed though) Wake up the next morning and shower, get the bronzer off and you're a tan goddess. I'm serious, I did this and NO ONE could tell I had a bottle tan until I showed them the toe I forgot to put the tanner on. This actually gives you a darker tan, and a more even tan then natural tanning. My boyfriend says I look like an Amazon when I put this stuff on, it's wonderful

It really depends on how well you tan. Different skin types and pigments tan differently. Personally, I do not lay every day but when I do lay out in the sun it is usually about 20-30 minutes per side. I don't use oils or lotions when I lay in the sun and it seems to work just fine without them. However, I do use lotions when I lay in a tanning bed (usually 20 minutes). They work alright for me but I've found that laying in the sun without lotions seems, for some reason, to get me tanner. Not sure why. Be careful laying out in the sun or in a bed. Too much can hurt your skin and sometimes cause skin cancer. I wouldn't lay every day if I were you. Test oils, lotions, and times out to see what works for you but don't get burnt. Good luck. A golden glow looks healthiest. Don't try to get too dark, you'll look bad.

Yes, tanning oils work very well, just make sure they don't have any SPF in it. And I lay out for at least an hour a day, more if you have the free time, but if your really pale be careful so you don't burn, you don't want to burn because then you'll peal, and your skin will look all blotchy, good luck Hun!

Start out slow... about 15 minutes first day then increase 5 more minutes each day monitoring yourself for any burning. Back-off when you notice any discomfort outside.
Tanning oils accelerate the process but also don't let you know what level of sun you're getting until you've gotten too much.
Go easy on the oil until you have started to darken the above way.

Stay out in the sun for 20 minutes or more each day. Tanning oils are definitely a plus. Obviously no sunscreen, lol. ♥

You know, it is a great idea to get a tan, but becareful make sure you protect yourself with sunblock it is very dangerous to lay in the sun wihtout protection - you can risk to get skin cancer. I do recommend to get those instant liquid or spray Tan no risk at all.

depending on were you live, I'm South-African and we can only tan for 20-30 min a day with minimum SPF15 on, and preferably no tanning between 11am-2pm...the UV rays are too harmful. Just take a lot of care of your skin. why don't you try self tan products?
