Ft. Myers is beautiful. I go down there 2-3 times/year for golfing and to get away from the winter up north. The water is EXTREMELY salty in the gulf, so don't open your eyes or mouth! Plenty of nice restaurants and clubs. The beach isn't dirty. Don't waste your time or money on Sanibel Island. You pay $8 to get to it with causeway tolls and beach access. First time I've ever heard of paying to use a beach. Once you leave, it's no coming back unless you pay again. Stick to Ft. Myers Beach. Nice and clean, plenty of sights ;) Traffic can be a pain in the butt to get into the area, but it's worth it. If you are able to stay close and walk or bike, you'll be in good shape. If you are a golfer, bring plenty of shirts w/ collars. They don't like T Shirts or blue jean shorts.

I lived my entire life in Florida until a year ago(when I moved to Colorado). Here's some thoughts from a "native" :

- The beaches depend on where you are. The beaches near Ft Myers are pretty prestine. That part of the coast hasn't been ruined like the Miami area or Tampa Bay. Casey Key is the best place on the west coast- it's not too far from Ft. Myers.

As for my thoughts on Florida- it's gotten too crowded. Traffic is terrible, crime is bad, and in the summer, it's just plain humid.

It's weird how Florida is called the sunshine state- it's a myth. I've never seen the sun as much as I have since moving out of Florida. Expect afternoon thunderstorms EVERYDAY if you plan on visiting in the summer.
