Burt Bacharach - many different people have done his songs from Dione Warwick to Ted Nugent to Elvis Costello to the Bare Naked Ladies to Luther Vandross. And Austin Powers loves him too. He's the piano player in one of those movies.
Lieber and Stroller wrote so many great songs, hey, even Elvis did thier song Hound Dog. Other songs Youngblood, Kanas CIty (covered by the Beatles); Poison Ivy; Love Potion #9; On Broadway; Yakety Yak; Charlie Brown; Little Egypt; Teach Me How To Shimmy; Jailhouse Rock; Spanish Harlem; and they wrote the ever popular
Stand By Me.

I agree with 2pac for the hip-hop side of music. He had fun with some of his songs, he told the truth, he told how he felt, he meant something by it, and they all had messages. Like his song Brenda's Got A Baby. Thats song is SOOOO true towards life and teenagers having children at such an early age.
Jay-Z was pretty good too.
Avril Lavigne is pretty good with song writing because she tells how she feels, and it's something that teenage girls can relate to sometimes.
But I pick 2Pac for number one.
