I'm not sure it is considered abortion in the animal world, but both dogs and cats can be spayed during heat or during pregnancy. Vets are willing to do this procedure because of the pet over population problem. If you suspect that your pet may have accidentally gotten pregnant, you can have her spayed and ask the vet not to verify if she was pregnant. For some people, this helps them not to have a guilty conscience. In some circumstances, it is necessary to spay a pregnant female. One example of this would be an accidental breeding between say, a mother and her son, or a father and his daughter. In some cases, when the whole line of dogs could suffer from a mistake, spaying a pregnant female is the only solution. Hope this information helps you and your best friend......

I work at a cat shelter and we do spay-abortions all the time.
Let me tell you.....you can spay a pregnant cat right up to delivery.
At an overcrowed shelter, there is no "too far along".
And yes, of course it kills the babies. That is sad, but when you see the number of cats and kittens killed each year from lack of homes, poor owners, and illness.....you do what you have to do to take care of the ones that are ALREADY here. At our shelter alone, last year alone, 600 kittens would have been born if not spay aborted. Where are the homes for all these kittens?????
If that was at our little shelter alone, how many others would have been born into a world with no homes for them. Oh there are more homes than we count, but there is no purpose in homing kittens into the bad kind of homes that they came from!!!!
Anyone who can't handle the spay-abortion does not live in the real world.

Yes, there is. My father is a retired large animal veterinarian. He got called out to a farm where the owner was expecting twin foals. It was soon evident that one foal was not going to make it, so my dad had to abort it before it died on its own. Her death might have caused the other to die. You will find abortion a common practice, especially with people who make money with animals.

yes. it depends on the pet, you can spay a pregnant cat or dog as long as they aren't too far along. if you are going to want to breed your animal again your vet can give hormone injections which can cause your pet to miscarry.

my horse was bred by a donkey that had broken through our fence and we had an abortion, i wouldn't recommend it though, she reacted horribly to this and if i had known it would be that way i would have let her carry it

um....... I don't think a vet will do that except maybe for an emergency. But they won't do it if you stupidly let your animal get knocked up lol.
