well technically fertilization doesn't occur in the vagina, otherwise it would either pass out of the body or risk an ectopic pregnancy. Secondly, the ovulation will happen whenever it is going to happen. Usually the sperm have to be through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes waiting for the egg in order for conception to occur and the baby to attach to the wall of the uterus properly. SO...for the answer to what I think you're asking, sperm can live inside the woman's body for around 48-72 hours, or so I've heard. Different things can affect this, such as if the woman's body attacks the sperm or if it's secreting a mucous prior to ovulation that lubricates and feeds the sperm. But as with everything related to pregnancy, you never know when something against the norm will happen!

Sperm can live anywhere from a few seconds to up to 7 days in extreme cases without fertilizing an egg. Eventually the antibodies begin to take over and kill the sperm

Sperm can live in the vagina, cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes for up to 5 - 7 days. If you are within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex emergency contraception is an option. If you are more than 10 days after unprotected sex, you may want to take a pregnancy test.

sperm will live up to 48 to 72 Hrs so if you have sex on Tuesday and don't ovulate until Wednesday your chances of getting pregnant are perfect. if you ovulate on Wednesday and have sex on Wednesday chances are not as likely because your egg has dropped but it can still happen. the sperm goes in the cervix and chills for a few before dying
