This is probably not feasible unless you ARE an architect. You can collaborate with an achitect to share your ideas but as far as actually designing your own home, you'd never get a permit.

If you are talking about designing your own plans for a deck or garage, or something similarly easy, then sure, no problem as long as you have a decent knowlege of local building codes and can draw to scale. I'm just a carpenter and have drawn my own plans for numerous decks and have never had them rejected.

If you have no training you can forget about it. Building plans need to be "stamped" to be approved.
