1. Despite the FIFA World Rankings there's no way the U.S. is the 5th best team in the world. Being ranked that high has probably upped expectations beyond where they should be. In a group with Italy and the Czech Republic it would be an upset for the U.S. to go through to the next round.
2. As for the rest of your question, unfortunately what many pro sports stars in the U.S. have in abundance, selfishness and arrogance, doesn't lend itself to success in team sports. So it's no wonder they've done so poorly in international competitions lately.

Although the US were high in the FIFA world rankings, the majority of games that they have played in the last four years have been against other North/Central American sides, this has led to them having an artificially high rating - and the Czech Republic are a VERY good side - certainly better than England (I'm English!)

I agree with Swim Love up there. Do u guys see how basketball and baseball are promoted. There are not many supporters of soccer in this country, so i ges our team doesnt have that much motivation. Did u guys hear that Ronaldo turned down the New York red bulls?

Nothing, Lets admitted their is good teams and their is bad teams. Their is teams who give it a little more effort to and some just need to keep on trying. Lets also consider that Czech is one of the leading teams in the world. Its the second best.

The problem is that we have a combination of first timers with others that are overconfident, this was a wake up call, they really messed up today, but if Bruce Arena is doing his job we should be able to see a different team next game against Italy.

I don't know what has been happening in any US sport other that football (soccer) but; in football it isn't really a suprise that the Czech Republic won as they are the better team and a good team.

Nothing unpredictable happened this afternoon. You've got beaten by one of the best football team in the world. What were you expecting for? A miracle? You know, you'll not win matches simply by praying...

Probably. I think the problem, though, lies in the fact that US too focused on national sports and titles rather than the international ones.
