Try gently squeezing a sponge, as the water falls out you will notice that it does not fall in a pattern, the same principle applys with rain.

It does, in fact, fall in patterns. You'll find, especially around mountains, that there is a 'footprint' to the rain. As air rises to go over the mountain, it expands and becomes lighter, thus less able to carry its 'rainload' and it drops rain. Once it crosses and descends on the other side, it becomes more dense, but it has already dropped all its rain. This is why the lee side of a mountain is always drier.
When the sky is completely overcast, rain just falls wherever the clouds are, but when the overcast is not uniform, you will see patterns, usually predicated by the wind, that acknowledge obstacles in its path.
Hope this is helpful.

Rhythm of the Falling Rain
Sung by Rick Nelson
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain,
Telling me just what a fool I've been.
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain,
And let me be alone again.
Oh, Listen to the falling rain.
Pitter, patter...Pitter, patter,
Ohhhh, Listen...listen,
To the falling rain,
Pitter, patter...Pitter, patter
Ohhhh, Listen...listen...
