I am an American that works in the much maligned American Media. True, not much emphasis is given to foreign stories simply because they do not fit the needs of an average American TV viewer. We do provide coverage of the bigger foreign stories. This coverage is delegated to the main networks because of the sheer overall cost of covering a foreign based event. The network "big Boys" as we like to call them have much more money, and many more resources at their disposal, than a local smaller news organization. It is not that we don't care about what is going on outside of our borders, but at the present time we do have a lot of our own news to cover. In the post 9-11 era, the way we cover news has changed. It is more of an us, versus, the rest of the world mentality. Foreign coverage is there, it is however not the main focus of of an American newscast.
I hope I was able to shed a little light on this subject for you.
Just a quick side note, Not all American media is the same. I think it is a bit unfair to group us all together when pointing out faults in a single area. With the advancement in Satellite TV, and fiber optic cable, the program content of the entire world can be brought right on to your personal TV screen. If you look around, I'll bet eventually you will find what you are looking for.

You forgot to mention the Volcanic activity in the Indonesian area.
American Companies controlling the Media? I'm not sure what to say
Perhaps the American news coverage is more American consumer friendly.

Did you ever consider that disasters in the US don't get as much coverage in other countries? Watch Pakistani, or Indian or whatever country you wish TV and see if it's truly that way.

I agree. Im English and spent a year in NJ and was amazed about how little world news coverage there is. I suppose the US is the strongest country in the world and its also quite insular.

Yes it is true, however the world media has their own goals. If you were to watch SKY news in the United Kingdom you would defenently hear more about european news than american news. However I do agree with you in the fact that the United States does dominate the business.

True. Though I see things like that all the time on news channels like MSNBC , C-span and such. Channelse made only for news. But on local news, they don't really show all that goes around the world, because well.. it's local news.
