My friend just got an engagement ring and I was lookin at it, And on the top it looks like 1 diamond but when you look close you can see that it is 4 little diamonds put together. Is that alot cheaper than 1 diamond in the center?

To answer this question we look at the 4 C's of diamonds. Color Cut Clarity and Carat. Now It's harder to tell color in smaller size. If you have a 3 carat diamond with grade d color (good) you can tell, but if you have 4 chips, 2 grade d to grade g, you'll probably think they are all the same. Cut doesn't make much difference in this instance. Clarity. The smaller the diamond the harder to tell the clarity without a loupe (pronounced loop) The best quality is F- meaning flawless. With a small chip you could think you have f, but the bigger the rock, the easier it is to see inclusions (flaws) Finally, we come to carat. The bigger the rock, the harder it is to get perfect colr, cut, and clarity. So look at all of these factors together and you get a picture of how much of a difference it makes. Now say each chip is perfect in each C. It's worth about $5,200. (based on 1/4 carat chips) A single rock would be about $6,000(based on 1 carat rock) You can see the link below. (that's where I came up with the prices.)

Absolutely, the 4 smaller ones would be cheaper, because the price of diamonds increases exponentially with size. The only problem with using smaller ones together is to match the colour perfectly.

Usually one bigger(good quality)diamond is more expensive than a bunch of smaller ones.
