i used to run cross country, my coach would take us to the beach or hilly site for us to run. day 1 - 3 miles on hill, day 2 - 6 miles on beach, day 3 - 5 miles on surface. 3 times a week

I would suggest about 75% of your mileage to be strictly cardio, building your aerobic base. In this you should keep your HR low and not push too hard. The remaining 25% I would break up between hill repeats and interval or Fartlek runs. (Fartlek means "speed play" and consists of performing sprints in the middle of a scheduled run, bringing the HR back down, and sprinting again.)

Harmony's got it pretty much right - lots of long runs on various terrain. And watch your nutrition - good habits can't be put on hold over the summer!
