Most people "of age" today (born in early 1990s and before) tend to have very common names like Jenny, Ashley, James, etc.

Once you get to kids born about 1995 onwards, you get really weird names. This generation is full of Emilys, Madisons, Dylans, Suris, and Apples. Frank Zappa is probably smiling in his grave right now!

People don't like to be one of 5 John's in a class, and so they wouldn't want their kids to be. I like unique names, they set you apart and give you something to be proud of and help give you an identity all your own. Plus it's fun to see how people try to spell your name or mispronounce it! Not only that, but many of the plain names really don't have unique meanings, and are derivatives of other names. Unique names usually have more interesting meanings, and are overall more fun. At least for girls anyway, guys may have a harder time with a unique name than a girl would.

I personally think that it's a care of "one-upmanship: - having a more unique name for your child that anyone else. For example, I am reading a book with a little girl named "Pajame". I know someone who met a man named "Orangejello". And the treand lately is to name babies "Nevaeh" - which is Heaven spelled backwards. I was named after my Mom - and I hate it to this day!

i must say, i think that the tendency of giving uncommon names runs in the families. both of my parents were given uncommon names (in the early 50s) and they gave uncommon names to me and my sister (in early 80s). my sister's name is sanda (can be spelled sanddha). i think it's very beautiful

In my opinion yes they do...I despise my common name, Crystal...I hear it everywhere...so I named my son Malachi, the last book of the old testament.
