I've had good luck putting the Scott's treatment down throughout the year. There are 4 cycles and instructions on the back of the bags which you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes.

If there are parts of your lawn that are more than 40% weeds, rent a rotatiller and dig it all up. Plant new seed.

Otherwise, try to treat with the wedd & feed Scotts products that help your lawn grow while killing off the weeds. You can also get a Round-Up spray that "won't kill lawns, just weeds" and use it to spot treat specific areas. Works great.

Good luck !

If it is like a 1 acre lawn, I would just use a mower for now and next spring use a weed and feed fertilizer, one with ATRAZINE works best (if you don't get too close to trees) otherwise, there are some weed and feeds out with TRIMEC and they would work right now, just not as effective, you need to wet the area and put it out when the weeds have plenty of leaf on it and don't cut for a week. Pulling weeds by the root on 1 acre would be a pain unless you get all the people that answer you and say to pull it by the roots to help you.

With a lot of land a rotavator type tging will do but then as long as it suny to dry the roots thrown up. This will have to be repeated and there are those plants that when you cut the roots into small pieces they make a plant each. Without chemicals pulling by the roots is always the best. Find someone to massage the back though
