My cousin, who is 13, gets between 50-100 dollars a week for babysitting some kids every day after school. She usually spends more then half of that on books. Her parents are constantly nagging her to stop buying so many and to save the money for something else. Some of our other family members agree, while others think it's great that she's reading so much. I think it's awesome that she loves to read, but her parents don't seem to understand that. Who's right, her or her parents? And yes, I know this is a ridiculos question, but she keeps getting different opinions about it and she really wants to know if she should stop buying so many books.

Im with you on this! Im a HUGE reader and love to spend nights curled up reading! You can go and be anyone in a book- u can travel anywhere u want and never leave your home! She could be spending her money on drugs and booze! I think she is an awesome person for earning her own money at her age and being wise enough to spend it on something she loves to do! This is her money- she earned it fair and square- its her choice what she wants to use it for and books are a great choice!

What about a library... can she not borrow the books. Reading is a great hobby and will help her in the future. Even if she buys the books, she's still increasing her education and vocabulary, as well as communication skills. Unfortunatly in this day and age many parents and students do not value such important skills. Try looking for a local library, which will make everyone happy. She gets to read all she wants, and have extra money for other things. If that is not an option, than read away... she won't have time for all that reading when she's done with school.

When your cousin is of age and she moves out on her own, she will have to learn how to spend her money. She will have to learn how to budget and save. This is the perfect way for her to learn. This may be what her parents are trying to tell her. Don't get me wrong, reading is good - very good at that. She can still continue to buy books, but if she can borrow a book from a friend or library that is also in store for sale I would recommend that she barrows the book. Sooner or later she will have to donate her books to a library because she won't have any storage space.

As with all money earned, you must learn to save a portion. When you start earning your own money you can start spending it and saving it in your own individual way. As with all life experiences we learn from them. Let her buy her books, there are worse things out there that should could be spending her hard earned money on. She loves to read that is awesome. Let her enjoy her hobbie. Praise her for being practical and sensible. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders if she is working to support her favorite hobbie....READING.

that's a good Hobie and it will help academically. The more you read the better you will be at writing and comprehension. Would everyone rather see her have a drug habit? That's a good thing. Her parents also might want her to be more social though. Read you your heart content. That's how my grandma learned better English. She learned the correct spelling of words and how to pronounce them better. Your friend is only expanding her vocabulary.

I think she should set aside some to save, but other than that, its her money that SHE earned, her parents didn't earn it for her and she should be able to get what she wants with HER money.
