I don't understand how some people can call themselves "Christians" when they advocate discrimination and bigotry against gay and lesbian people.

These are the folks that say "gay people don't have long lasting relationships" and then work their hardest to ban gay marriage. If that isn't the definition of talking out of both sides of your face!

I wish more of them would consider "What Would Jesus Do?" - since he never said anything against gay people, but rather "love your neighbor."

Communication is a funny thing. You don't always hear what another is saying because what you hear is flavored by what your views and experiences of life are.
So to answer your question, Christians that preach hate and discrimination are not listening to what God has to tell them. We must always check ourselves when listening to others that we are really hearing what is being said, otherwise it could be just our interpretation of what is being said.
The reason "Christians" teach that homosexuality is wrong, is quite complex and not easily understood. I think many who preach it are quite rightly described as homophobic. A concise explanation of the basic tenants of why christians view homosexuality as wrong follows.
There are three basic elements to its wrongness,
First, Love is act of creation, no person on their own can create another person. Yet God allows us to participate in this very special and act of creation when two people come together as male and female. Two males or two females cannot share in this sacred gift.
Second, Love is about completeness, when God took the rib from Adam to create Eve, he did it so that a man will never be complete without a woman and vice versa. A woman completes a man, together they become whole.
Third, Love is about service, because typically men and women are poles apart on their perception of the world and the needs they have to survive it, for their relationship to survive and their Love to flourish they must learn to serve each others needs.

This answer is as brief as it gets and leaves many questions unanswered. But it might be a start for further enquiring.

In your eyes what is considered gay? Gay is a generic word for homosexuality. You asked WWJD? Read 1 cor. 6:9-11 it talks about the wicked not inheriting the kingdom of God,(9-10). Verse 11, "And that is what some of you were". The word, "were" the individual was a wicked, (mentioned in verses 9-10), it is passed tense and also states "But you were washed, you were sanctified , you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.The word "But" unless you are washed by the Blood ,Sanctified,Justified they cannot inherit the kingdom of God. God, however, does save and sanctify people like those described in verses 9-10. Blessings to all.

It's those people that give true Christians the bad rap. The ones that go out insulting and demeaning others "in the name of God" don't understand the religion at all. So what if they're gay? It's their life, not yours. God will meet them at the golden gates and decide what's right and wrong, so go kiss your wife and forget about it! That is why I don't go to church. I'm a Christian, but why venture into a nest of vipers when you could stay home and praise God?

"These people" aren't Christians. They may think they are, they may proclaim it verbally but God does not see it this way. A lot of people claim to be a lot of things but that doesn't mean they are true or righteous. It is not just the Christians who are self righteous, you will find this every where in every walk of life. What God said in the bible is that we should not lay with our own kind, male w/male or female w/female, nor should we commit sodomy in any way. God does not discriminate
against Any type of person, gay or straight. He loves us all.

I apologize to you for any hurt you received from insensitive Christians as I am one. Too often we forget the person behind the action. Even though I may not necessarily agree with homosexuality I respect the people and know that they are loved by God.

Amen! Thank you. Some people just really enjoy telling everyone else they're an abomination or going to hell, if they don't believe exactly the same as themselves.
Oh well, I guess that's what makes the world go round!

Well, you've asked a good question, haven't you? People who claim to be Christians are often the ones who are the least tolerant. It is kind of like people who claim they are smart. If they have to say it, it probably isn't true.

They don't preach hate and discrimination, but their view is that if you don't follow the only path to salvation, then you are doomed and destined to eternal damnation. That is why they want all people to be part of the way and repent and be saved. In a sense they are indirectly preaching intolerance, but they do it for their purpose of saving humanity from sin and hell.

i refer to those types as "lower case c" christians... always ready to fix the ills of EVERYONE else, but can blindly ignore their own. religion is worn on the sleeve for all to "admire". more of a contest than anything else, if you ask me. "how many can YOU save today, hal?"
