The soul (as we commonly use the word) does not exist. It is a concept, a theory, used to describe certain attributes we see ourselves as possessing. Those attributes--consciousness, empathy, emotions, personality, and symbolic thinking--have thier bases in bio-electro-chemical workings of the brain. All those attributes can be found, in varying degrees, among all forms of animal life, especially among mammals--so it certainly cannot be said to be unique among humans.

Since the "soul" is a biological process, it is then more accurate to say that the "soul" is a byproduct of Life, of the processes of living. It does not, and cannot, "give" life to the body. It is not a cause of Life.

What casues "life" and "living", then? No one really knows. Some say it happened spontaneously, others by an act of will. Im sure my opinion on this matter is apparent.

Postscript:
Thanks for the definition, and that was the definition I was assuming as I wrote my post. So, my answer remains the same.

Our soul is what makes each individual unique, but does not give life to our body... you or parts of your body can live (whether assisted or not) without a soul to guide them, but the soul makes us a unique and special character.

maybe its the 'after effect' of energy that used to be the charged impulses going from the brain to the varous parts of our body.....the synapse of the brain so to speak. If the body dies, does the energy (for lack of a better word) continue on without the body, at least for a while?
