~Sounds like you are independant. Its supposed to be a matter of personal preference. Just because you register as one particular pary doesn't mean you have to vote that way. Unfortunately most people forget this. My advice is to ignore the party affiliation and pay attention to the issues and the causes in question.

I am a Democrat, but "better" is a relative term - there are plenty of democratic supporters and politicians I don't like or even agree with. Both parties have their core philosophies, and it's difficult to judge the ideals of a party by either its candidates or supporters. Bill Frist is not John McCaine. Robert Byrd is not Nancy Pelosi. It's pretty easy to lean one way or the other, if you tend to agree with one side much more often.
It's different if you split the issues a lot. At that point, you should probably label yourself an independent, or find another party which you tend to agree with (libertarians are quite popular these days).
The problem is that most issues don't only have two solutions, but politics has shaped itself into a situation where there can only be RED or BLUE, SOLUTION ONE or SOLUTION TWO, with far less ground in-between. Of course, there are those politicians that are fighting this, but many would rather tow the party line in an attempt to gain political power.
You can be both, or more accurately neither. Pay attention to the candidates and vote for the one you think is the better choice. Too many people already view politics as a game to be won or lost, without really caring about what either side says. Identifying with one side and then always voting that party doesn't help anyone.

Democrat.
First of all, they're less evil. All politicians are corrupt, and are going to do anything to further their career, so it's not like Democrats are so awsome. But, currently, these Republicans we've got right now are nothing short of despicable. Not only are they so corrupt it's almost funny, but they're completely incompetant, and they're in the pockets of corporations. They don't seem to have any grasp on reality at all. And doncha love this war!?
Not only that, but if you look at how some of the people have responded to your question, many of them claim to be in the center. Now, I'm sorry, but you cannot deny that the Democrats are very much in the center, while the Republicans are very, very, very, very, very far to the right. The Republicans have basically been trying to get a theocracy going in this country, trying to get rid of abortion, teaching evolution & sex education. On the other hand, there are basically no liberal Democrats right now -- they're all centrists. (Just look at the gay marriage issue -- the Republicans are howling to burn gays at the stake, while the Dems are certainly not saying they WANT gay marriage...) So, don't just repeat what you heard on Fox news, saying that the Dems are these crazy super-liberals. Look at things rationally, and tell me who is more in the center.
And, I'm sorry, but a monkey could do a better job than Bush.

Republicans tend to trust in the private sector system (free enterprise) and be a bit suspicious of the public sector (government.) Democrats are the opposite. They trust the public sector and are suspicious of the private sector. The truth of the matter is that neither are better. We need both sides to continuously struggle with other. That way neither side gets too far out of hand. The struggle puts checks on the extremes. By the way, I tend to lean toward the republican side.

I'm Democrat so I can vote in the primaries.
They are both pretty much the same. The fake fight keeps other parties out of elections mostly.
Democrats share a bit more and are slightly better. I like John Kerry and Ted Kennedy, maybe for being Irish and liberal though, rather than just Dem.

None of the above. As you can probably tell, I'm neither. I'm more "middle of the road". Both parties have some philosophies I agree with, and both have stands I totally disagree with. That's why I'm always so frustrated during election years, I only have two choices, and they are both from one of those parties. Yes, there are liberal party candidates, but they rarely even gain a legitimate foothold. You can't be "both", but you can certainly be neither. Look at the Liberaterian candidates for inspiration. Maybe if enough of us middle-fo-the-roaders band together we could get one of them on the ballot.

I like that. There aren't many out there who would admit that. I'm a Republican but a moderate conservative. I lean more toward the conservative than the liberal but I'm not hardcore. I find that many democrats are extremely liberal and they just won't consider any other point of view, just like the ultra conservatives.
