In group D, I noticed that Mexico and Portugal currently have 3 points. However, both teams performed differently. In group B, Sweeden and Trinidad/Tobago have just one point. Can someone explain this?

Win = 3 points
Draw= 1point
Loss = 0 point

In order to maintain the difference in the standing to arrange who goes above who, there are some formulas to do so:

In the World Cup it is by making a simple mathematical operation, the goals for minus goals against, and then the number is the goal difference. This number can be positive of negative, whoever has the bigger number goes above the team that has a smaller number. Like a 0 goal difference, will go above a team with -1 goal difference.

Also in some leagues like in Spanish League they use another system, for example if two teams are tied in points, they look to the game they both play and the one that had win that games goes above the other team.

But it wasn't like that always, before 90's there where awarded

Win = 2 points
Draw = 1 point
Loss = 0 point

But in order to impulse offensive game they award one point more to the victory.

Mexico won the game, that's the 3 points, the same as Portugal, and Sweeden and Trinidad/Tobago finished tie, so, they got 1 point each.

3 for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss
standings are also influenced by goal differential
Ex. Ghana is currently ahead of USA b/ they lost to Italy 2-0 (-2 GD)
USA lost to the Czech Rep 3-0 (-3 GD)

mexico and portugal won their matches, therefore each win earns 3 points.
sweden and Trinidad and tobago drew, and each draw earns 1 point.
teams who lost earn 0 points obviously.

For anyone else looking for the answer to this question, there's actually a lot more to determining who advances than just wins/draws/losses. You can read the full breakdown in the FIFA regulations (see source below). You can also just use a calculator like the following: http://worldcup.100pianos.com
