Last time I went overseas, I had to learn and speak Italian. Isn't Rome a tourist destination too? Just as much, if not more so than Philadelphia, and South Philly at that. So why is it that I have to learn to speak Italian if I'm a tourist in another country, but here, we're expected to cater to the whole world?
And what tourists who know no english say to themselves (in their native language of course) "Let's go to South Philly and get a cheesesteak"? Do you know how hard it is to find Geno's if you don't even know where you're going?
Lastly...since I last checked, America is a capitalist society. There is Pat's right across the street. If you don't like Geno's, go to Pat's.
Joe Vento has done more for Philadelphia than anyone in the Mayor's office or any councilman. If he wants that sign out there, he should be able to keep it. And if you're not from Philly, mind your own business.

I agree with him. He has every right to post that sign. While they arent turning people away, I think that if you want to move to a country, any country, you should know the language or atleast make an attempt to learn it. It is his right and freedom of speech to post the sign. He may see protest, but that is his choice. People that make a point to protest are rediculous as well. There was an article the other day and they interviewed a lady who hardly knew english, but she knew how to order at Geno's in english. It's not hard to learn to say "Philly Wit"
You know damn well that as an English speaking American, you can not expect to move to Mexico, France, Italy, Spain or any other country and not learn the language and expect to survive. While many countries are teaching english in school, you will find more places that no one speaks english or is willing to help you if you dont know the language. On top of that they will be spiteful and pretend that they dont comprehend.
So...yes he has EVERY RIGHT to post that sign. I agree with him whole heartedly and I go to Geno's every time I travel through Philly. So what if he only has a 9th grade education, he has a multi-million dollar business that is a national icon. How many people who get an education can say that???

I think he's right and I'd buy a steak from him if I were in the area. He figures that if his immigrant parents had to learn English when they came here than other immigrants should, too. And so do I. BTW he hasn't turned anyone away in the six months the sign has been up because they couldn't speak English. Besides, he has the right to say what he wants or to put up that sign. First Amendment.

The owner of Geno's has EVERY right to put that sign up and I applaude him for it! It's about time someone had the nerve to stand up for AMERICANS' rights in AMERICA!! Yes, he is the son of immigrants and his mother and father HAD TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE TO GET BY IN THIS COUNTRY!! He feels that the foreigners of today should get away with nothing less.
Regardless of his education, he owns one of the most famous cheesesteak joints in Philadelphia (the country at that). He has done wonderful things with that 9th grade education. Again, I applaude him.
Any business owner has the right to refuse service to anyone they choose.
If he is tired of trying to understand people who don't know English (and they can't even learn the words "cheesesteak with" or "cheesesteak without") and the foreigners don't like it, then they should walk down to a restaurant that serves their native food and stay away as he has requested.

In this case I think that this is insulting. While I fully agree that immigrants to the U.S. should make every effort to learn English, Geno's customer base is not only local residents.
Geno's is a famous "must-visit" landmark of Philadelphia and probably has a large share of its customers come from other countries while on vacation. Many visitors will not have the best command of English (though what is scary is many visitors speak English better than the "natives"!)
Not only is he alienating and insulting visitors from other countries, hurting potential business, but he is giving a bad impression of America to those that come here on vacation.

I think the man's got a damn good point and I'm proud to be from philly! Viva la Geno's!! If your living here (especially illegally) then you should make an effort to learn the language. If I went to live in Japan, I would make an effort to learn their language because I'm in THIER COUNTRY!!!!

He has a right to have a stupid sign. You have a right to not patronize his place or protest at his place.I wish that that I could do the same thing with my job with some other issues.
