The shakes are caused by the earth's underground movement - the technical term for this is 'tremor' (or a temblor, if the smaller shake comes after an earthquake). A bigger shake would be an earthquake - often very destructuve in terms of life and property.

Peru is located where the Nazca and South American tectonic plates converge. These two plates are converging at a rate of 78 mm/year, with the Nazca plate moving relatively eastward and slipping beneath the North American plate. As the plates grind past one another they cause minor tremors and sometimes they 'stick' for a number of years when there is little movement, but when they do eventually release this causes a large jolt in the earths crust and the major earthquakes that Peru has experienced over the years.
