I have a friend that is dating a guy that just got divorced and she about to break up with his girlfriend. I tried to tell her that if he could give them up that fast, what makes you think that he won't do it to you?

They've been dating for less than a month and are talking about marriage.

Well, I would recommend to first live together for a while before marrying or even deciding to do so - that's a good test to see if it works in practice, don't you think so?

I actually know one couple only that hasn't lived together before marrying (here in Switzerland).

Between 1-2 years.

I believe the time period is determined by the couple's goals and stage in life. A younger couple may prefer to wait longer while an older couple may choose to commit quickly.

The frequency of meaningful communication is also important as a couple can date for a long time and only have fun without meaningful and purposeful observation and discussions.
This could pose a major problem if they commit.
The time is really determined by your level of comfort and whether you identify qualities in the person that you desire in a life long partner.

All the best in your relationship.

It depends greatly on the two individuals. There are times when people know within their hearts the time is upon them. However; in most cases I believe people should wait until they know each other enough to accept the negative qualities as well as the good ones. The real purpose of dating is simply interviewing. The process were you determine rather you and the other person are willing to invest in each others lives permanently.

They should date at least 3 months before they decide. Then after they decide, WAIT 2 YEARS!! Believe me, a lot of hidden traits come out and it's better to know ahead of time.

It varies from couple to couple. My hubby asked me to marry him 3 months after we started dating, but we didn't get married until we had been together for 2 years. It should happen when you both know its right.
