Usually you just need a wrench,but I suppose a large pipe wrench would hold the ball if you don't want to scratch the chrome wrap the wrench teeth in electrical tape.Soak the nut and around base of ball in wd40 a little first.

Most trailer balls have 2 flat sides on the base so you can use a large Crescent Wrench on them or a pipe wrench always works

try a pair of vise grisps(you turn the screww on the bottom,then it allowos you to lock onto whatever you are grasping
