Sometimes you can't prevent it at all. I've had it for the past five years- I'm just predisposed to get it because of my genes.
If it's only mild, try setting up a good skin routine. Cleanse, tone and moisturise with non-oily products. Always use a moisturiser that has a SPF in it. Exfoliate twice a week, and use a face mask suited to your skin type twice a week as well. St Ives and Crabtree and Evelyn are really good brands.
Always, ALWAYS take your make-up off before bed! If you can, use a night-time face cream, such as the Body Shop's Vitamin E cream, as the vitamin E can help reduce acne scarring.
If it bad, or if you think it's bad, go to your doctor. There are a range of face gels and tablets that can be prescribed. If it presists, ask to be refered to a dermatologist, who can give you a real intensive treatment. I'm on that now, after years of battling bad skin, and it's finally clearing up!
Most of all, don't let it get you down. I always thought mine was the worst skin in the world, but looking back in photos I realised that it wasn't half as bad as I thought. Good luck!

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.
In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.
Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.
In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.
If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Drink at least 7 glasses of water a day. Do not eat greasy foods such as french fries. Wash your face 2 times a day. I recommend using the cleanser bar purpose. You can get this at Walmart. It should cost no more then $5 dollars. You should use moisturizing cream too. A cream that doesn't clog your pores. Also, you should wash your hair at least 3 or 4 times a week. I think that's it.

Stop speaking in slang...just kidding
Wash your face with a good soap 3-5 times per day. Start with water as hot as you can stand it (this opens the pores and gets the junk out) After rinsing splash very cold water. You'll feel the pores tighten. Then DON'T TOUCH! Touching your face adds oils and dirt. If you touch it, wash it again. Pat dry in a clean towel, don't scrub it makes more oil.
Hope that helps.

It's not always preventable - it's those damn female hormones.
The way you can try is to:
always remove all make up daily
wash your face using a non-prefumed cleansing agent
moisturise - every other day
treat yourself to a face mask once a week (you can always just use steam - just need a towel to put over your head & a bowl of hot water & about 10 minutes- this opens your pores up).
Good luck

drink lots of water and practice good hygiene... that means wash your face daily and wash your hair at least once a week,(depending on hair type).the oils in your hair will have less chance of coming down in your face, neck or even your back especially when you're hot and sweaty .also try de-stressing
