My son asked me this question. Why does the sun appear to be black in photographs?

I can think of 2 possibilities. One is when they use an occulting disk to block out the Sun (because it is so bright), so you see a black disk, and then you can see the space around the Sun. They do that to look at the atmosphere around the Sun. Take a look at the first link below.

The other possible answer is that the photographs are not taken in normal visible light but some other wavelength. in the second link, there is a picture where the Sun's 'normal' surface looks dark. The caption helps explain it.

The sun is constructed of nothing but gases. Some believe that there actaully might be a planet underneath but are unable to prove this due to the heat.

The gravity of the sun is what keeps these gasses from escaping. The black spots that you see in the photographs are changes in the actual formation of the gas. Pockets are sometimes created due to the shifting of its unstable environment.

You cannot see it due to the naked eye because the sun is 11 times bigger than the earth. So Im told.

It doesn't .. those photos that look like that are taken by blocking the actual disk of the sun with a filter (much like the moon does to it during an eclipse). What that type of picture shows is the atmosphere of the sun, or it's "corona".

In B&W photos? Well the sun is made entirely of gas, and it is not clear. Mostly the sun looks light/bright yellow, and in photos that comes out as kind of grey. Hope this helps.

If you are referring to a plain picture taken with a camera, the intense light of the sun has simply burned the film.
