If you want the best for your buck, I recommend building yourself a computer to suit these needs. I built one myself for under $700 that can out-perform any laptop on the market today.
On the flipside, if you want the portability and you're not too concerned about quality, then you can get a nice Dell Laptop for $1000 that will last you for a little while.
I do not recommend being suckered into getting a Compaq or an HP. They're cheaply built computers for a cheap price. Nothing but problems.
