You can use any octane equivalent to the dealers recomendation or higher. The higher the octane the more efficeint the engine runs. This is escpecially true if you need that extra burst of power for passing, you dont want engine lag then. Higher octanes also run cleaner and keeps the engine clean with more additives. It also burns slower than regular fuel which means better fuel economy.

Use the recommended fuel as per the manual.

Yes, higher octanes do run hotter, but most on-board computers adjust the engine timing based on the octane level, so the engine is at the same temp.

Most new cars do not need the extra octane... It is a marketing ploy. You're better off buying a 99 cent bolttle of fuel additive like STP for the detergent value.

Like they say, a fool and his money are soon parted!

Most modern vehicle recommend 87 Octane (Low Grade) The timing and all other systems are computer controlled. Each vehicle has a knock sensor that will compensate for the low grade "Burn". If you wish to go a little farther for a few cents at the pump mid grade will do. Your buddy is right about the temp. Higher octane equals hotter burning engines.
The best thing is to read and use the recommended rating per the owners manual. That way you will not void any warranty.

It will not make the car run hot! It will, though, waste your money. Plus and Premium just prevents high compression engines from pre-ignition, or pinging, that is all. In fact, putting regular, in some cases and some states, will cause more harm than plus/premium due to the water content in the gas.

What does your auto hand book recommend? I would think the Toyota would only require 85 (regular) octane.

stick with regular or plus, you definitely do not need premium -although newer cars should run fine on any grade
