That is funny because I work in both. :)

I am an HR rep for a major company that deals in the biological/chemical realm. I find the people I recruit for dealt with the scientific world on a short term basis before converting over to the corporate sector.

They do this simply because of better payouts, benefits, bonuses, etc.

I was a temp for a long time and I can tell you my experience was that they are very much the same, though a scientific environment some how seems to lack the life and vitality of a corporate setting. Most of the scientific spots I was in (as a secretary or whatever) were dreary.

I think it is better to work for youself if it is at all possible. It is so wonderful to really get to live 100% of your life for yourself (and not 8 hours a day for someone else).

Peace!

the two are not mutually exclusive. You can work in the corporate world and also in the scientific world. Many of the scientific breakthroughs are accomplished by corporations. IBM invented the disk drive and tens of thousands of other computer related inventions. AT&T invented the transistor. Most of the modern drugs were invented by drug comanies. Wall Street invented the leveraged buyout. ha ha. Lockeed invented the stealth airplane.

By the scientific world I take it that you are referring to academia. At least that is what comes to mind. Unless you are a super star you will spend most of your time attempting to teach undergrads freshman chemistry or introduction to physics or maybe introductory astronomy.

they are starting to blur in many ways since you can be part of the scientific world even if you work for a corporation. either way funding is the name of the game, if you work in an academic setting it can be very political in the competition for funding. in the corporate world you need to make sure your company is making money to support your work. either way it can work if you have good co-workers and you enjoy what you do.
