This is the 2nd new battery for this laptop. I returned the 1st battery to the supplier. It is not a original IBM battery. The 1st and 2nd battery responded the same in the begining. Teyh would run for about an hour and then just shut down as if you pulled the power cord, even though the battery gage showed that it was around 60% charged. The only difference with the 2nd battery is that now it will not power up the laptop and it shuts down if you pull the power cord with the gage showing 100% charged. I have adjust the power properties several times and all programs are up to date including the bios. I purchased this pc 2 weeks ago with out a battery.....Thanks for your help.

Make sure the battery is inserted correctly and than go to the desktop and right click the desktop and choose properties and than screen saver and on this there will be a button that says power click on this and you will be able to check the settings for battery usage and make sure they are all set to the correct settings!
If this does not work contact the manufacture of the new battery!

Hope it helps!

IBM A31s are prone to get bad batteries relatively easy. But let's start basic.

First thing to try is to boot the laptop without the power cord plugged in. Does it turn on? If yes, then it's probably a configuration setting with the operating system.

Is your battery new or used (new to you)? Sometimes batteries are DOA. If you can, try a different battery to see if this fixes the issue because then you'll know if it's the battery or not. Used batteries that are recycled are about 50/50 that they'll work. Make sure your battery is an IBM battery. Not some third party made battery compatible with your laptop.

Third thing is to check your power settings in Windows. This can be found in the control panel. Make sure you have the correct profile associated to your laptop use, and that it's set correctly.

However, by default, your laptop should automatically switch to battery power when unplugged. If nothing stated above is solving your problem, then most likely either the battery is bad, or the hardware its attached to could be bad.

Did you try restarting it?
