Because they can be. Seriously many factors come into play for why people become Homophobic.
1. The way they were raised.
2. Strong Religious Convictions.
3. Ignorance.
4. Self hatred for suppressed Homosexual Feelings they have.
5. The desire to create uniformity in a totalitarian society.
6. A feeling that Homosexuals should be at the same level as Pedophiles, Rapists and Perverts.
7. The lack of Tolerance and acceptance of every human individuals right to freely love another consenting adult.
8. Ignorance and religious superiority-did I say that already?
Homos do not make the choice to be homos-nor is it a lifestyle-Liking leather, liking to decorate all the time or jetset to circuit parties, that is a lifestyle within the Homo Community. Homo is not a lifestyle or choice it is who they are as is anyone of us who is brought into this world.

The word homophobia was invented by the gay community to cover up the fact that there are people who are intelligent enough to question why. The gay community had no facts, logic, scientific proof, logic or reasoning to back up their claims. So they labeled anyone who questioned them as homophobic, bigoted, ignorant and so on. Yet, still after hurling these words at heterosexuals, some heterosexuals still did not succumb to the gay communities rhetoric. This angers the gay community that some heterosexuals will not fall to their indoctrination It not only angers them, it scares them. How can the gay community gain acceptness when there are people out there intelligent enough to question why? Who actually think for themselves. ABSURD!
To have the intelligence to question why, shows that one has a critical mind, to think critically. Not "getting it", on controversial social issues is a critical thinker. The critical thinker is looking for the facts, logic, reasoning and scientific proof. To the critical thinker, simply being told they are ignorant, homophobic or bigoted is laughable, childish. They identify this attempt by homosexuals for what it is, name calling.
I am a critical thinker. I am not homophobic. I refuse to let the gay community label me homophobic just so they can feel better about themselves. It is yet another idea from the gay community I do not accept.
If the gay community wants to advance they have to come up with something better than calling others names.
( If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything )

They aren't homophobic (fear of homosexuals), it's just a term that was made up to explain why certain people don't agree with the homosexual lifestyle. Unfortunately not everyone in this world will get along ever so make the best of it and live life to the fullest without dwelling on what other people think.

I don't think fear of the unknown is ignorant. People have been brainwashed, from quite a young age in some cases, to believe that is it wrong, sinful and even deadly. I am glad that there are so many people who are not homophobic.
Really, though - we could ask why are people claustrophobic or agoraphobic. It is just an unreasonable terror of an everyday situation.

I am not homophobic. Why should I be scared of gays? I don't agree with the lifestyle. It is against God. That doesn't mean that I am homophobic. Not everyone has to agree, the sooner that homosexuals get that through their head the better.
crystal balls got it right!

Because people are afraid of things that are out of the norm heterosexual world we live in. They also don't understand it and many people always use their religion as an excuse to be homophobic

Some people are homophobic because they have a closed mind and they are afraid of things that are different from what they're used to. Then, these people grow up and have kids and teach their kids to act similarly (or the kids just pick it up subconsciously from their parents' behavior). For it to change, you have to convince one of these children to think for themselves.
That's my opinion anyway.

The simple answer is (like other people have said) ignorance, which is the lack of education, and fear of what they don't understand. It's sad that some people hate love. They just cannot see past what they have been told to see the truth.

Fear. Homophobes generally fear their own sexuality or are insecure in their sexual identity or both. Frequently, homophobes are also misogynists. Part and parcel of the mindset.
