Generally, alphanumeric characters include more than just letters and numbers. They are also all the special characters like space ( ), comma (,) asterisk (*), etc. In other words, alphanumeric characters are any character that you can type on a keyboard.

Apart from alphabetic & numeric characters, sometimes additional characters are considered alphanumeric. For example, on IBM mainframes the characters @, #, and $ are considered alphanumeric characters.
