it up and down? The drain plug seems locked in there somehow. How do you get those out?

under the sink is a rod with a u-shaped metal part on it. Pull that off the rod. Unscrew the nut and remove the rod. The drain up top should now pull out.

My son just replaced one of mine. He went under the sink and
disconnected the piece that holds the stick in place and he
installed a new one. He found the replacement piece in a
hardware store. There is also a special tool that might be needed
to loosen the works. Mine was rusted, though it was only five
years old. Ask the sales rep in the department where you find
plumbing supplies.

On the underside of the sick...on the tailpipe...the long pipe before the trap there is a bar that comes out....usually has a nut that is hand tight...unscrew this then pull the bar out then you can remove the stop in the sink...then revirse this to put it back.
