Mankind has exploited the natural resources of the planet earth for most of history. In prehistoric times, mankind learned to use stone for tools and building material, and then developed the ability to refine metals such as copper, gold, and iron for tools, weapons, and ornaments. As humanity developed agriculture and dometiscated animals, humans began to change the environment by needing farmland or pasture land. Besides ore and gem mining, farming, grazing, and timber cutting, man found new resources from the earth - fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas, and nuclear materials like uranium. Man also learned to dam rivers for water and energy. Lastly, man uses the earth as a trash bin for much of civilization's refuse, whether it be trash in a landfill, or pollution in the air, water, or soil.

Nearly all human activity involves taking something from the earth, and the only problem is when it is not sustainable or renewable. The earth's fossil fuel supply will eventually run out, and certain metals that are mined are already becoming harder to find. Meanwhile mankind's need for food and living space has plowed over or paved over many different environments, causing major changes to the habitats of many species. Pollution has fouled the earth to the point where even pristine habitats far from human settlement might have pollutants brought in the air or water.
